Virtual Expert: Mark Rozin Mark Rozin was awarded Photographer of the Year in the 2007 AAEA Photography Awards Program. What was your initial goal when taking this photo? I was covering cowboy lifestyle in Eastern Washington in the fall of 2006. For three days, I documented the unique lifestyle of four generations of cowboys and their families. In that challenging but remarkable environment, I found new ways to tell their stories through my images. What was your thought process and what procedures did you follow in approaching and/or setting up the photo? My workflow begins with a series of questions in order to understand the subject. Next, I evaluate the location, quality of light and possible perspectives. Once I choose a vantage point, I work with composition, subject placement, depth and other available elements to my disposal. In the small window of opportunity I try to use all possible variations. What elements of your photo make it exceptional? To make the compelling image I used tight cropping to emphasize the intensity of my composition and eliminate distracting elements. Vertical orientation and uneven balance give the image dynamic tension, visual strength . Controlled depth and natural lines add dimensional perspective, motion and lead reader's eyes to the focal point of my composition. What advice can you offer to young photographers in pursuing a photo like yours? First understand your subject. Evaluate your options and visualize the final work. Develop a workflow beginning with the basics: subject, light, composition, exposure, and creative techniques. How did you begin your career? Photography has been my passion since yearly childhood. I use every opportunity to practice, learn and share my skills and knowledge. After years in commercial photography I chose to focus on agriculture journalism. I hope to communicate through my images about people and the land I care about. What advice do you have for those just graduating in agricultural communications? Know your audience, stay relevant and honest. Practice and continuing education are essential. Share your knowledge and get inspired. What does it mean to be a member of AAEA? Being an AAEA member gives me unlimited opportunities for networking, feedback, inspiration, professional relations, and continuing education. Anything you would like to add? Be determined, motivated and honest. |
