Miller

"In the May 15, 2006 issue, National Hog Farmer launched a new series --"The Masters of the Pork Industry." Our intent is to feature the personal experiences and the business philosophies of movers and shakers in the U.S. pork industry. These are hand-picked industry visionaries -- some at the top of their profession, others young ambitious entrepreneurs. My interview with Wendell and Dell Murphy offered both -- a seasoned veteran who started by raising feeder pigs on dirt lots and built his enterprise, Murphy Family Farms, into the largest pork production system in the world -- and his ambitious son, Dell, who adopted the family's dedication to hard work, community and family. Perhaps no one is more widely known in the U.S. pork industry than Wendell Murphy. My interview with this father-son duo was enlightening and, at times, very emotional. In my 34 years of reporting on the U.S. swine industry, I would count this interview near the top in my career. I was honored to have the Murhpys' story be recognized as the 2007 Personality Profile winner." -- Dale Miller

Judges' Comments:

""Writing, transition and quotes are excellent. Turned what could have been a highly involved subject into an easily understandable one."
