"For our "Best Places to Live in Rural America" feature on Union County, S.D., we wanted to show farm kids in real life situations. I called around to find kids who showed cattle and came up with the Dean and Cynthia Farley family who show registered Herefords all over the country. I asked permission to photograph son Dale -- who was the main showman -- training and washing his best steer. Dale did that for me, leading his prize steer around the yard and posing for photos. During a break in the shooting, he tied the steer to a fence post. His younger sister wandered over to pet the steer and soon the three of them were interacting. I didn't do much other than push the shutter release about 20 times during a five-minute period. I think the image does portray the special relationship that farm kids have with animals they raise." - Jim Patrico

Judges' Comments:

"It's so good that it looks like a Hallmark card. Everything is in the proper place. It's a wonderful shot."
