"If you have toured a commercial mushroom farm, you know that getting good photos presents a challenge. The large atmosphere-controlled rooms where the mushrooms grow are dark, humid and offer precious little space around the stacked wooden production trays. As a result, available light is hardly an option, and flash on camera looks like, well, flash on camera. Taking that same small strobe off the camera and broadening the light by shooting with an umbrella or through a scrim could work effectively with somewhat limited equipment. I toted a studio strobe system through two airports, although the final picture was done simply with a single strobe head and umbrella, set up about 90 degrees to the right of the subject. Ostrom Farms CFO Clay Frederick isn't a production worker, but was willing and wearing a photo-friendly blue shirt and red company hat. The mushrooms' round shape, always a plus, created pleasing depth. Shot with Provia 100 slide film." David Lundquist
