Back to Fort Worth After 39 Years By Hans Mueller, Switzerland For me, attending the IFAJ Congress 2009 in Fort Worth was coming back to the town I stayed in when I visited the United States the first time in 1970. For nearly three months I worked as camp counselor at Camp Carter. I lived with a group of 10 kids in a cabin and was responsible for the rifle range. Before the IFAJ Congress started, Andy Atzenweiler, a member of the staff of the organizing committee, drove me to the campground. It still looks almost the same as it did 39 years ago. They have been running more or less the same program for the kids coming to the camp since I used to work there. By walking around I saw some new cabins and a new recreation hall. One thing is different: They have air conditioning in the cabins, the dining hall and other buildings. In 1970, there were only some fans in the dining hall. During the conference in Fort Worth, we had a great evening at the stockyards. I went to the stockyard in 1970 and remember the cattle waiting there for the auction. The visit to the Superior Livestock Auction in Forth Worth showed me that Forth Worth has remained a very important place for serving buyers and sellers of cattle. Starting the introduction of satellite video marketing in 1987, Superior Livestock Auction has grown to become the way lots of cattle are marketed nowadays. At the stockyards there are shops and restaurants instead of cattle. I enjoyed very much to have the opportunity to come back to Texas and to see more of this huge and beautiful country. Many thanks to all of you who made this wonderful IFAJ Congress 2009 unforgettable. |
