Dr. Keith Collins Named
2007 Distinguished Service Award Winner

Dr. Keith Collins is Chief Economist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He is responsible for the Department's agricultural forecasts and projections and for advising the Secretary of Agriculture on economic implications of alternative programs, regulations and legislative proposals. Dr. Collins has played a key role in the development of almost every piece of national agricultural legislation since the mid 1980s; serving on the Secretary's task forces for the 1985 and 1990 farm bills; leading the analytical efforts to develop USDA proposals for the 1996 and 2002 farm bills, serving as key author of the Administration's proposals in 1990, the so-called Green Book, and again in 1996, the so-called Blue Book. There are many who believe there is no one person within USDA who is more knowledgeable about such a wide range of farm and rural policy issues than Dr. Collins. He has always been a "terrific source" of information for agricultural editors because of his fairness, accuracy and balanced approach to farm and rural policy. He is known as someone who makes sure the people he serves come first.

AAEA has named a Distinguished Service Award recipient since 1947.

This award is sponsored by Archer Daniels Midland.

Qualifications

The selection committee seeks someone still active in agriculture rather than part of the distant past; someone who shows significant potential for becoming an agricultural leader; and someone who would consider the award meaningful, be willing to accept the award at the AAEA annual meeting and make a short speech.

While contributions to the industry are important, service to the agricultural community is equally important. A nominee's interests, like those of many past recipients, should include giving something back to their community.
